‘Sherlock’ Season 3 Premiere : ‘The Empty Hearse’ Review

‘Sherlock’ Season 3 Premiere: ‘The Empty Hearse’ Review

A lot has happened in the two years since Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) seemingly leapt from a building to his untimely death in the Sherlock season two finale ‘The Reichenbach Fall.’ For John Watson (Martin Freeman), those two years have culminated in him finally settling down with his cozy GP job, his nice new home, his experimental facial hair and his lovely fiancĂ©e-to-be Mary Morstan (Amanda Abbington).
For Sherlock, the years haven’t quite been so kind. The third season finds the consulting detective shaggy-haired and bloody, being tortured for information in a Serbian prison. To add insult to injury, a bird has pooped on his gravestone. After finally managing to dismantle the last of Jim Moriarty’s (Andrew Scott) criminal network, Sherlock is called by to London by his brother, Mycroft (Mark Gatiss), to prevent an imminent terrorist attack, conveniently helped by the fact that his name has recently been cleared of all the crimes that Moriarty attempted to pin on it.
There’s a lot of exposition to cover in this episode, though that’s helped by the 90 minute running time. ‘The Empty Hearse’ plays catch up with most of the key characters from the series, some of whom have moved on a great deal in two years while others… haven’t. Scotland Yard’s forensic expert Anderson has perhaps undergone the most radical change of heart, having started a Sherlock Holmes fan club and lost his job as a result of his insistence that the detective faked his own death. Jonathan Aris’ portrayal of Anderson’s somewhat unhinged obsessiveness is both funny and a little disturbing, and the audience is definitely left wondering what part Anderson might play in the rest of the season arc.

Despite the title, ‘The Empty Hearse’ is a surprisingly light-hearted episode that avoids some of the dreary or melodramatic pitfalls that could have plagued scenes like, for example, Sherlock’s revelation to John that he is still alive. Definitely a highlight of the episode, this moment cheerfully straddles the border between heart-rending and hilarious as the detective handles the situation with his usual grasp of sensitivity and tact.
Some of the humor can be a bit hit and miss (the show’s running “no homo” gag really needs to die), but even the weaker jokes have their own kind of charm. Cumberbatch and Freeman’s strong screen chemistry is the cement that holds Sherlock together and it shines brightest when both actors are engaged in volleying matches of dialogue, but the supporting cast hold their own as well. Abbington in particular is a welcome addition as Mary, whose relationship with John comes across as very sincere and comfortable, and who acts as a mediating influence in the turmoil of Sherlock’s return.
When discussing the upcoming third season of Sherlock on a recent SR Underground podcast, one of the complaints that came up was that the witty dialogue and excellent performances are not quite matched in quality by the actual mysteries of the show, and that’s a criticism that certainly applies to ‘The Empty Hearse.’ There is a bit of a head-scratcher regarding a train passenger who mysteriously disappears from his carriage between stops, but the terrorist plot is somewhat dwarfed in an episode that is largely concerned with Sherlock’s return and the re-establishment of character relationships.
This may have something to do with the fact that ‘The Empty Hearse’ definitely feels like a ‘Part 1′ more than either of the other season openers. Rather than being a purely standalone episode, much of the running time is dedicated to setting up characters and clues that will presumably become more prominent in the next two episodes of this season. One unfortunate side effect of this is that the episode’s plot and structure feels rather loose and meandering – more like a collection of minisodes than a cohesive whole.
Nonetheless, any concerns that Sherlock might have lost its magic during the hiatus should be allayed by this generally strong season premiere. ‘The Empty Hearse’ might not rank as the best episode so far, but it makes one hell of a good entrance.

Alonso out to end Champions League heartache

Tuesday, 31 December 2013

The Real Madrid midfielder is determined to help the club achieve 'La Decima' this season to atone for a string of semifinal failures.
Xabi Alonso insists Real Madrid must reach the Champions League final this season after a heartbreaking hat trick of near misses.
The Blancos have been eliminated in the last four of Europe's premier club competition for the last three campaigns, at the hands of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.
Those defeats have elongated Real's quest for a 10th European Cup success, but Alonso says the painful memories will act as an incentive for Carlo Ancelotti's men to reach this season's final in Lisbon on May 24.
"In recent years, playing for Real Madrid, being knocked out of the semi-finals of the Champions League was very painful," the Spanish international told Club del Deportista "That is why our aim is to reach the final this year and put those defeats behind us."
Real has started this season's competition in fine form, winning five of its six Champions League Group B games to set up a last 16 clash with German outfit Schalke.

Rooney a doubt for Tottenham clash with Van Persie ruled out

The Netherlands international has been sidelined since December 10 with a thigh injury, while the England striker did not train Tuesday because of a groin problem.
Robin van Persie has been ruled out of Manchester United's Premier League fixture against Tottenham on Wednesday while Wayne Rooney remains a doubt with a groin injury.

The Netherlands international has been sidelined since December 10 with a thigh problem.

Rooney, meanwhile, missed Saturday's 1-0 win over Norwich City and did not train on Tuesday ahead of the match against Tim Sherwood's side at Old Trafford.

"Robin is not quite ready, we don't think," David Moyes told reporters. "He is not too far away. With Wayne we need to wait and see. He has not trained today so we will need to assess it tomorrow."

Moyes also reiterated the club is open to securing new signings in the January transfer window, but admits the month may be difficult.

"We would always look to try and add players, but I am not sure January is a brilliant month to do business. We will be out there looking as I am sure everyone else will be," said the Scot.

Aurelio De Laurentiis: Napoli envied by everyone in Italy

The Partenopei president claims Rafael Benitez will lead the side into an era of glory, fueling further jealousy from the rest of the Serie A clubs
Aurelio De Laurentiis says he is confident 2014 will herald the dawn of a successful new age for Napoli.

The outspoken president used his annual end of year address to compliment the work of coach Rafa Benitez and claim the rest of Serie A is envious of the way the San Paolo club is run.

The Naples outfit underwent a seismic summer overhaul after losing long-standing coach Walter Mazzarri and star striker Edinson Cavani but has rallied to nab third in the Serie A table heading into the winter break.

The club president says he can only see things getting better into the New Year.

“We have to be pleased with what 2013 brought. The fans want to win and that is all, but we must remember that we started out as a club built from nothing," the 64-year-old told Radio Kiss Kiss. “Italian clubs struggle to compete with the revenue of Europe’s giants. We followed Financial Fair Play rules and were able to achieve as much as other clubs without wasting millions. We have less than half the turnover of Juventus.

“I send a message to those know-it-alls who tell us to buy him or him: I am proud of the Napoli players who are envied by everyone."

And De Laurentiis also insisted that Benitez is the right man to lead Napoli forward.

"We wanted an international choice and a coach capable of giving our football an identity like the most important clubs in the world, with a complex 4-2-3-1 system," he continued. "Our objective is to keep reinforcing Napoli via Benitez and give him time to reap what he sows. No offense, but I don’t see other more prestigious clubs doing that well.

From Xabi Alonso to Victor Valdes: The Liga stars whose contracts expire in 2014

A host of big-name players could leave their clubs for nothing come the end of the season, so Goal gives you the full list of players who can talk to other teams starting Jan. 1.
January is a time for reflection, renewal and change. And with 2014 just around the corner, many players across Europe will be either playing to earn new contracts at the end of the current campaign - or planning a move to pastures new.

Spain's situation is uncertain for many people - and that includes the soccer industry. At the budget end of La Liga, some sides will need to check their finances before handing out deals to players soon to be out of contract, while others may simply be surplus to requirements.

Athletic Bilbao has moved to extend the contracts of three of their more important players, with captain Andoni Iraola penning a new deal recently, along with Ibai Gomez and Carlos Gurpegi. Also in the Basque Country, Real Sociedad has secured the services of defender Ion Ansotegi for one more year. Villarreal also moved to tie up talismanic midfielder Cani for four more years earlier this month, while Atletico Madrid has a verbal agreement with the in-form Raul Garcia that should be announced in January.

At Real Madrid, Xabi Alonso continues to mull over an extension, with coach Carlo Ancelotti hopeful the midfielder will stay beyond the summer. Barcelona, however, will lose goalkeeper Victor Valdes at the end of the season, while his understudy Jose Manuel Pinto may also leave as his contract expires in June. The Blaugrana do hope to announce new agreements with young defenders Marc Bartra and Martin Montoya in the coming weeks, however.

Here, Goal gives you a club-by-club guide on all of the Liga players who could become free agents come June 30, leaving them free to speak to other clubs in January.

Beckham on his back

His ability from free-kicks helped to turn him into a global superstar, but David Beckham's famous feet let him down on an ambassadorial trip to China in March. The former England midfielder was showing local children how to take the perfect free-kick when he slipped and ended up flat on his back!

Submit URLs With Fetch as Googlebot

Though Google has gotten good at tracking down new web pages, it still offers multiple ways for site owners to inform it of URLs they want the search engine to crawl and index. Recently, Google added one more: Fetch as Googlebot.

If you’re familiar with many of Google’s features, you know that Fetch as Googlebot has been around for nearly two years. Webmasters can use it through Google Webmaster Tools. Tell Fetch as Googlebot to crawl a specific URL on a site you’ve verified, and you’ll see your page the way Google would see it. This is great for figuring out and debugging website issues that don’t show up if you’re simply looking at the site through a web browser.
Now, though, Fetch as Googlebot lets you take things one step further. If it successfully fetches your URL, you can request that Google index it by clicking a “Submit to index” link. You won’t want to do this with every page on your website, as there are important limits and points to consider, but it’s great to have this additional option.
One important point to keep in mind is that you can only submit 50 pages a week in this fashion. You can submit all pages linked from the URL you’re submitting you’re submitting as well, but you can only do that 10 times in a month. Additionally, Google notes that submissions of images or video are more appropriately made by using Sitemaps rather than Fetch as Googlebot.
You should also keep in mind that submitting a URL in this way does not mean that Google will definitely put the page in its index. In its blog post on the topic, Google states “that we don’t guarantee that every URL submitted in this way will be indexed; we’ll still use our regular processes – the same ones we use on URLs discovered in any other way – to evaluate whether a URL belongs in our index.”
On the other hand, using Fetch as Googlebot does speed up the process of crawling your URLs. Google will do that within a day of your submission. It’s worth remembering that not everything Google crawls goes into its index. And not every URL that Google learns about gets crawled right away, in any case. As Vanessa Fox explained on Search Engine Land, it arranges the list of URLs it discovers in priority order before crawling them. Google uses a number of factors to determine the priority of a web page, including the page’s overall value, PageRank, frequency of change and how important Google thinks the page is (this is why news home pages tend to get crawled and indexed very quickly).
If you want to take advantage of this new way to submit URLs from your website to Google for crawling and possible inclusion in its index, it’s best to use it for new areas and categories on your site. If you’re making a major update, Fetch at Googlebot will also serve your need to get Google’s attention quickly. This will help you to speed up URL removal or cache updates as well.
You can also use Fetch as Googlebot, to a limited degree, as part of a campaign to promote your website and raise awareness of your business. Google notes that “You can also submit URLs that are already indexed in order to refresh them, say if you’ve updated some key content for the event you’re hosting this weekend and want to make sure we see it in time.” You can use this to make visitors happy, or avoid having them get angry.
For example, I’ve attended a number of weekend-long events that involved a great deal of planning, along with an associated website (or at least a section of a website). These events often included several tracks of programming, but with so much going on involving many people (often volunteers), the actual schedule didn’t gel until a week or less before the event. Using Fetch as Googlebot once the schedule has been turned into HTML pages and/or PDF documents to make Google aware of the pages can help…especially if you have a few last-minute attractive additions, like someone with a large fan following.
How you choose to use Fetch as Googlebot is up to you; for most purposes, you should probably continue to use Sitemaps. But Fetch as Googlebot sounds like just the thing to use if and when you’re getting ready to expand or extensively revise your website, and you want Google to know about the process as quickly as possible. Good luck!
